Today’s stone love. Many of you stonemasons will recognize this iconic building. Believed to be over 1,000 years old, the Gallarus Oratory is a dry laid stone structure located on the Dingle Peninsula in Ireland.
.
It is extraordinary in many ways, and was a dream to have finally visited. Incredibly, it is still water tight after so many centuries.
.
Standing in this building, I am reminded of the lineage of stoneworkers going back hundreds of generations, that I am a part of. I feel honored to have devoted my time to building functionally beautiful spaces and this place is an inspiration in so many ways. Look for a short video I took of walking inside this place.

Today’s stone love. The morning was really stressful and I was in a cranky mood. Traveling internationally with a toddler has been trying, to say the least. We were out searching for a dolmen that wasn’t marked, and asked around until a local woman directed us to it.

I sat inside for a while, meditating with my eyes closed, and had a really powerful experience. When I opened them, there were all of these cows and a bull crowded around the opening, staring at me. Totally made my day.

Today’s stone love. Grange stone circle is the largest in Ireland, and is estimated to be ~4,000 years old. It is a place of wonder and power in my experience. My wife, Lindsay said, after spending time there, “It feels like being in a circle of elders”.

After visiting many places of historical significance and sacred spaces around the world, it’s always interesting to see and feel these places from an energetic perspective. Sometimes they feel asleep, or tired, or as if the magic has withdrawn deep within the earth. Other times they feel brighter or more awake. Places on private property feel different from ones on public land that have been turned into tourist destinations.
.
At Grange, I felt a portal that had been kept alive by modern people, tended, nurtured and celebrated. Like many of these places, I had tears well up as soon as I came into the presence of these stones. That, and Emma liked playing in the puddle.

Today’s stone love. Lots to say about this stone, and this place, and the wonderful people we were there with. Here’s the short version.

This is the CatStone, Ail na Míreann (stone of the divisions), on the Hill of Uisneach, during the fire festival of Beltaine. Uisneach is said to be the geographical and symbolic and sacred center of Ireland. It is said to be a meeting place between Earth, the Otherworld and the source of creation. Most importantly, Fergus describes it as the “sovereign bellybutton of Ireland”.

Being there at sunset was a magical time, even more so with the company of new friends @ferguspackman and @annobannano and Dúalta, and my wife @capaciousarts and daughter Emma.
.
I watched as my 1.75 year old daughter Emma ran around and greeted everyone, blowing kisses, while we scrambled to keep up with her. Later we all stood together as the sacred bonfire was lit on the hilltop, and then after dark we trudged wearily down through the rain and mist to our car, said our goodbyes, and made the long drive back.

Today’s stone love. Neolithic passage tomb at Loughcrew, in County Meath, Ireland. There are many monuments in this area and this is but one, dating to 3000BC. The opening aligns with the rising sun of the autumnal and spring equinox, illuminating the stone passageway. Many things to say about visiting here, but mostly I’m in awe of the presence of this place.

Today’s stone love. It has been a dream of mine to enter the inner chamber at Newgrange for a while now, and I’m so happy to have finally experienced it. As a stonemason, I see the more recent reconstruction of stonework on the outside as a bit of an oddity. It is visually striking, but has countless bonding issues and contrasts greatly with the stonework inside the mound.
.
Aside from this, it was a truly powerful experience to enter inside the earthen and stone structure. It is a place of power, magic and deep history, and only makes me want to build similar structures for more people to see and feel.

Today’s stone love. Rigging stones is a bit of an art. It involves knowing the center of gravity of an irregular stone, how you want to place it and how to fly it through the air safely before setting it in the earth.
.
This one looks like it is going to slide out from the cable, but the stone had a large nub on the backside which is holding the cable in place. The idea is to rig a stone exactly how it will sit in the landscape, so when you set it down it will land evenly and not move. It takes practice and also a feeling-sense of spatial awareness. It’s also a lot of fun.

Today’s stone love. We worked in the rain, and then the snow, to make some progress on this job. We’ve been setting some granite and sandstone boulders to retain a hillside and to create a set of steps. Of all the work we do, this is one of my favorite things. 45 tons of stone and a wonderfully clean canvas on which to build something beautiful.

I asked our client the other day if what we had begun building was what he originally envisioned. He told me that what we are making was much more magical than what he expected. Of all the possible words, magical is one that hits home the most for me.

This little crescent shape in a 2.5 ton stone we set held water as it rained today. It was a nice little surprise to notice.

Today’s stone love. New job began today and we have over 40 tons of sandstone and granite boulders to play with. Here’s a small sample of them. It always feels like inviting old and new friends over. We get to know them and they find their place in the matrix.

The thing I love most about setting larger stones is that it is about relationship. One stone may look really good on its own, or it might not look that good at all. But once you place it in relation to other stones, it begins to serve a different purpose.

My birthday is today and historically it’s been a mixed bag. High expectations, moments of sadness, joy, friendship, wanting it to be special and also not caring. Today was a good day, though. They are both floating, which makes for a bunch of steel underneath and a more complicated installation process. We’re happy with the result, and the clients are too.
